This is an old light industrial mixed-use area of San Francisco that has gone through a rapid gentrification. Many interesting old industrial buildings, warehouses turned into loft live/work spaces. Technologies and design offices have moved into the area in the recent past. Come with these developments are good restaurants, coffee bars, wine bars, clubs, etc. Please note that by the nature of an ally in SF downtown and a mixed use light industrial/residential neighborhood, one may experience homeless people on the street at certain time. Like many cities, one also needs to be alert and cautious walking in the ally at night - hiring a cab when coming back late is recommended.

There is excellent bus service on the Mission Street and Market Street, in addition to historic streetcar on Market Street (F-line), which runs from the Castro District to the Ferry Building daily every 5-12 minutes from 6 am to 12:30 am. The studio is also a short block and a half away from BART (commuter train) and MUNI (subway) Station. There are also many car-share such as Zipcar parking spots nearby as well as a few bike-share "Baywheels" stations less than a block away.
If you have your own vehicle, parking in the building is no longer available. However, there are numbers of garages nearby, the closet one is NEMA parking, you may inquire for the rate at NEMA parking or SoMA Grand Garage (a few short blocks away). There is also a street parking on Grace Street, however only after 10 pm to 8 am. From 8 am-10 pm is a one hour parking on Grace. You can also park on Howard Street over night for free after 6 pm to 9 am of the next day at all metered parking spots. Please be cautious, if you are interested in parking on the street, do not leave anything visibly in the car or in the trunk. Like many big cities, I saw broken glass on the street, once in a while, cars got broken into randomly sometimes.
