The Marais is the best part of Paris. Marais means swamp in French and it used to be the poorest and most dangerous part of the city, even into the 90s. Because of this when baron Haussmann bulldozed the streets and created big boulevards in the 1800s he left the Marais alone so it is one of the only areas in Paris where you still have little windy streets, crooked corners, and small buildings. On Sundays it is the busiest place as it's the only place where shops are allowed to stay open and the streets are closed to cars. It's now considered the gay area and is where most of the funky and innovative shops are located. It is also the area where the Orthodox Jewish community lives and so you will find long lines for the best falafels in Paris. In the Marais you will find the Pompidu, the national archives, the Picasso museum, Hotel de Ville (the mayors office), the photography museum, the doll museum, musee Carnavalet (Paris history museum), the city library, the Jewish museum, the hunting museum and Place des Voges. Of course there is a lot more to see in Paris and as you are directly in the middle of the city it only takes half an hour to get anywhere from here! There is also a great nightlife here with lots of bars. Although mostly a gay area there are also straight bars within walking distance as well as jazz clubs and fantastic restaurants. And don't worry about the noise on the weekend as we have double glazing and so the apartment is a haven of peace and calm.

Metro Hotel de Ville, Rambuteau and Chatelet. RER Chatelet Les Halles. One of the main places for all buses going anywhere. There are also bike rental stations close by and of course it's a great area to walk around.
