Our 'cottage style' Rio Lobo Cabin is situated 4800 feet elevation in southwest New Mexico and has become one of our more popular vacation property rentals. Fully furnished in southwestern ranching style, this home is located on360 acre private acres snugged up against Bear Creek on the southwestern edge of the Gila National Forest just 35 miles northwest of Silver City, New Mexico. This home offers 950 sq feet of country living and is comfortably furnished with everything you need to start your next long or short term vacation adventure (including a washer/dryer for those packing light!). No annoying ambient light makes for excellent dark sky star gazing.
The Double E Ranch is filled with a variety of outdoor activities. Sleep in just a little longer or enjoy nature's wonders at your own pace. Numerous bird watching locations nearby and in the area often present an ever changing list of sightings. Wander along Bear Creek Canyon or hike to the top of the (more advanced) Double E Ranch Trail for stunning, expansive views of the Gila. Active adults will find endless miles of hiking on well mapped and well marked trails throughout Grant County and are suited to a variety of skill levels. Check your cabin information booklet for a few suggestions of places to start. The Double E Ranch is home to a significant variety of wildlife sighting opportunities and can include Rocky Mountain Bighorn Sheep, deer, javalina, wild turkey, mountain lion or black bear. Or, just relax while rocking on your cabin deck!
To jump-start your vacation and for your convenience, the pantry is supplied with complimentary short term supply of items such as gourmet spices, condiments, spices, sugar, coffee creamer, tea, cooking oil and spray, pasta, rice, microwave popcorn, canned meat chunks, foil. A few miles from your cabin you'll find our local convenience store/gas station. They are stocked with fresh dairy products, eggs, ice cream, bread, canned fruits and vegetables, frozen meat, lunch meat, soda, snacks - open 7 days a week.
The cabin is a gently upgraded authentic vintage 1940's cowboy bunkhouse making it convenient for you to explore all that southwest New Mexico has to offer. This historic cabin is situated at the headquarters of the Double E Ranch. In this hidden valley just a few miles from the Village of Gila NM you can still experience the character and atmosphere of early southwestern New Mexico ranching life where 100 year old ''picket corrals" and original barn are still in use today.
A short 3 mile drive from your cabin you'll find services that include: medical clinic, library, post office, senior center, a variety of churches, gas station/mini-mart, local realtor. The largest town in the area is Silver City, 35 minutes drive away and includes grocery shopping, restaurants, night life, movie theaters, museums, antique stores, night life and more!
The Rio Lobo Cabin was the original bunkhouse used by those cowboys who lived and worked this 100 year old historic southwestern ranch from about 1910 to sometime around 1996 when its 30,000 acres became the Double E Ranch. At nearly 5,000 feet elevation, this lovingly restored, spacious 1-bedroom Rio Lobo Bunkhouse Cottage offers milder weather in every season, nearly 280+ days of New Mexico sunshine and clear, dark New Mexico skies made for star gazing. Take advantage of our much milder winters and continue enjoying your favorite outdoor passion.
The covered deck is perfect for savoring your first cup of coffee in the morning, reading a book while enjoying the afternoon breeze, or relaxing with a refreshing beverage after a day of exploring.
If you listen carefully, you may still hear the "ca-chink, ca-chink" of well-used spurs and boots that once walked these same hardwood floors. The Rio Lobo Bunkhouse Cottage offers lots of living space so it really lends itself to an extended vacation. The kitchen features full-sized appliances, including a dishwasher, and an adjacent dining area, so you can cook-in as much as you’d like, saving you the hassle and expense of dining out. The completely remodeled bathroom comes with large bathtub/shower, and a conveniently located private washer/dryer. Pack as light as you want – you won’t run out of clean clothes!
Decorated with vintage Western furnishings, cowboy art and framed Western romance paperbacks from 1920 through 1950s - including those of Louis L’Amour and Max Brand - you'll soak up the spirit of the Old West.
At New Mexico Cabin Rentals, you can participate in a wide-variety of free-flowing, set your own schedule activities, including hiking, birding, rock hounding, photography, stargazing, archaeology and maybe some mountain biking. Explore the hill sides along Bear Creek for the remnants of the Ancient Ones - the Mimbres Indians whose famous red/ black pottery shards can still be found, as well as arrow heads and or other hand made tools. The horseback riding is spectacular. If you’d like to bring your own horse, we’ve got self-care pens and a 300’ x 250’ enclosed arena.
